Tips to Stay Cool this Build Up in Darwin

June 28, 2019
With the dreaded build up just around the corner every air-conditioning unit in Darwin and Palmerston will be working overtime to keep our home and offices cool. The biggest dilemma faced by people at this time of year is which is more important; your comfort or your bank balance. These are a few helpful tips to help you stay cool this wet season and get the most out of your air-conditioner year round.
Close the Doors, Windows and Curtains

It seems obvious to make sure that all doors and windows are closed while running the air-conditioner but sometimes we need to be reminded. Your air-con was chosen to deal with the size of room it was installed in and not for all the other rooms that have the doors open and definitely not for the garden. By simply insuring that all exits are blocked you can significantly increase the cooling effect of your air-conditioner.

By closing the curtains and/or the blinds you can block out some of the suns heat, decreasing the indoor temperatures immediately. This means that your air-conditioner will not have to run on overdrive to cool the same space it has been all year. This will help keep your room cool all year round.
Think About Better Airflow

Think back to all those science lessons you had in school and you will remember that hot air rises. So to make sure you get the best cooling effect from your air-conditioner you should ensure that you utilise the horizontal airflow function on your unit. This will allow the air to be thrown out to the maximum distance falling down over the space you need cooling.
Make sure you are using the Correct Mode on your air conditioning remote.

As most Territorian's know, it is not the heat it is the humidity. Before the rain kicks in the humidity can get up to 95%. Let’s face it this is what we dread most about the Wet Season. While it is super humid you may find it useful to try the “Dry” mode on your air-conditioner. This will take some of the moisture out of the air. Helping to make you feel a lot more comfortable. But remember, the dry setting will cycle your unit, and if you feel uncomfortable at any time we would recommend sticking to the "cool" setting. You may even see a decrease in the amount of times you need to use the “Cooling” mode. You can view what we think are the best remote settings to use in Darwin.
Don’t Neglect Your Air-conditioner

It can be easy to forget about cleaning our air-conditioners. But when you think about it there are very few household appliances we use more often than our air-conditioner, especially this time of the year. The last thing we need is our air-conditioner to break down or to stop cooling at the wrong time. Every air-conditioner repair company is overrun with calls at this time of year so who knows how long you could be waiting for a repair job. Preventing this can be as easy as regular maintenance. By regularly cleaning your air-conditioner you can make sure that it will cool better for longer. Everyone knows about cleaning the filters regularly but do you know how else you can look after your air-conditioner?

If you are finding that these helpful tips still aren't keeping you cool, remember to check out what you can do before calling an air-conditioning company and avoid a service call.

Mouldy Air Conditioning Vent in Darwin
By Jason Gebert April 15, 2020
The first sign many people notice is a musty, mouldy odour. If you do a thorough clean of your office or commercial space and the smell is still there, it’s time to check your vents. Getting your Air Conditioning Contractor to remove the covers and take a quick look inside may confirm the issue, especially if you see mould or notice a stronger smell in that area. If the scent is stronger, but you can’t see the mould, then the growth is possibly further in the ducts. Another sign of a mould issue is the sudden onset of allergy symptoms. If you or a co-worker notices burning eyes, scratchy throat, or a runny nose that gets better when you leave the office, there could be an issue. Arranging for your HVAC technician to check your filters should be the first step. If it needs to be changed they can install a new one. If the symptoms continue they can do a quick check of your vents and a visual check of your ducts. Inspecting your duct work can also provide clues to a possible mould problem. An Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) can check for signs of moisture build-up, such as condensation, dark spots, or actual leaks. Mould needs water to grow, so any signs of condensation or leaking could indicate a growth hot spot. Duct cleaning and coating is a specialised job and as such the majority of HVAC companies sub-contract duct cleaning and coating out to companies like ours. At Advanced Air we have our Air Systems Cleaning Specialist on staff ready to undertake any duct inspection, cleaning or coating project you may have.
